I love planning parties. You'd probably think I was crazy if I told you that I've been planning my baby's first birthday party since before she was born. Mostly I deliberated on where to hold the festivities, since there is a seven-hour distance from us and most of the other party guests. I finally settled on asking a relative if we could use their seven bedroom home in Montreat, NC. It was a nice meet-in-the-middle location for all the party goers.
This party was a family only affair. And our darling daughter has many doting family members. Two sets of great-grandparents, two sets of grandparents, three aunts and one uncle. They were all there to help us celebrate her first birthday.
For people who love planning party details, you don't need to go much further than Pinterest to find all the inspiration you need. There are many creative ideas to peruse on this online pinning site. With so much inspiration, it's easy to go a little overboard, and maybe set some unrealistic party goals.
So from the beginning, I told myself I wasn't going to get disappointed if I couldn't complete every party detail. The focal point of the party isn't how elaborate the decorations are or how creative the food is. It's all about celebrating a life.
So here are a few scenes of our girl's first birthday party.
I think silhouettes are sweet and classic. Mr. Price is a whiz at the computer, and he was able to create a silhouette of V using Microsoft Paint. (yes, Paint! We don't have Photoshop, which I know would have been much easier.) I used her silhouette to create a banner.
With 15 people in attendance, I wanted to keep the food simple and easy to make. I wasn't going to be able to pull together a large menu. So we had chili and baked potatoes. I used a Pioneer Woman recipe, and also made a Paleo chili for our health conscious family members.
As a treat for our family members, we splurged and bought gourmet hot chocolate from Ticket Kitchen. I think it was a hit! I discovered Ticket Kitchen on blogs about two years ago, but this was my first time trying their hot chocolate. I've been waiting for an occasion to indulge, and it was definitely worth the splurge.
I wish I could have made a birthday cake using my grain mill and freshly ground flour, but it just wasn't in the cards. I ordered a plain chocolate cake from the 2nd helpings Cafe and added sprinkles to it myself. This was the cake for the adults. I made almond flour cupcakes for the birthday girl, and other family members who don't eat grain.
And I guess this is the time I should tell you about the Birthday Party FAIL! At least one thing has to go wrong at a party, right!?! As we were singing Happy Birthday to V, I lit the candle on her birthday cupcake and set it in front of her. She immediately reached out grabbed it, burning one of her fingers. The singing came to a halt, while screaming commenced. I felt like such a idiot! I guess I didn't get the memo that you don't light candles in front of babies. Seems like I should have known that...
Another minor fail, was the fact that I didn't finish completely dressing my baby. That's right, no special 1 year birthday outfit for this girl. A shopping trip for a special outfit wasn't in the cards either. I don't know, it didn't bother me either. But I put her in a long shirt and forgot to put pants on the girl. The sad thing is that I didn't even realize it until I was reviewing pictures of the party. She was wearing the cutest little socks that Mr. Price's mother bought her for the occasion. They had birthday candles on them and pretty ribbon. Definitely think I'll be adding those her birthday scrapbox.
Since the eating her of cupcake was a failure, we moved right into opening presents, which helped her settle down a bit. She sat in my lap almost the entire time we opened presents.
All in all I think the party was a success. And it was great to be able to celebrate it with those who love her the most!
I know the 2nd birthday party will come around just as fast. But no, I am not already planning it!
