I am happy to introduce the first post by my husband! He is introducing a new series to The Price Report: Music Monday. Music has always been one of his passions. He's been playing the guitar and cello for more than 14 years. When we first met, he introduced me to Jeff Buckley, Derek Trucks, Ours, Muse, Jennifer Knapp, Keb Mo and Jonny Lang to just name a few. I loved it! He definitely helped me expand my music interests beyond the pop music that is always playing on the most popular radio stations. He loves to analyze music, and he has taught me to listen for cool things like key changes and time signature changes. Hopefully through Music Monday he'll do the same for you!
I love it when I come across an album that I've never heard from one of my favorite bands. (I have a few hundred favorite bands, so I still haven't heard all of their albums.)
My most recent find is Blind Melon's newest, titled For My Friends (2008).
From the first time I heard their self-titled album, it was, and has always been on my top ten list. A few years ago, I listened to Soup, and it was hit and miss. Some great songs, some fillers. For My Friends has a little filler, but overall it's a great album. Of course, Shannon Hoon isn't on it, but the new singer sounds a lot like him!
Here's a sample:
While I'm at it, Blind Melon's lead guitarist, Rogers Stevens, is incredible. It's hard to tell just from listening, but when I try to play his stuff, his style is so unconventional and creative, I have a hard time keeping up. And I love that. It's not just shredding solos. His ability to to blend lead riffs into verses is a rare one. It's like the color in a coloring book, perfectly inside the lines.
